  Ch. Belle-Vue 2003 (FWHM1503)
  Classification: Cru Bourgeois (Haut-Medoc)

A strong success, the 2003 offers a fragrant bouquet of black cherry jam, cedar, and toasty vanilla, a beautiful texture, and considerable persistence on the palate. The final blend included 27% Petit Verdot, which is rather remarkable. Perhaps that explains the freshness in this wine from the southern Medoc. Drink it over the next 7-8 years. Belle-Vue is an excellent choice for consumers seeking fairly-priced, high quality, classic Bordeaux. This nearly 25-acre vineyard is planted with an unusually high percentage of Petit Verdot (20%) along with 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot.

A classic Bordeaux nose of licorice, cedar wood, black currants, and some tobacco leaf is followed by a medium-bodied, nicely concentrated wine with light tannin and a savory mouthfeel. Drink it over the next 7-8 years.

  Ch. Cantemerle 2006 (FWHM0106)
  Classification: Fifth-growth

As I indicated last year, quality has improved dramatically at this estate, and the 2006 is a quintessentially elegant Bordeaux displaying a dark ruby/purple color, a lovely bouquet of forest floor, sweet cherries, cranberries, and black currants, medium body, a textured, sweet, tannic mouthfeel, and a long finish. Everything is beautifully pure as well as perfectly balanced in this outstanding effort. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2025. Excellent value.

  Ch. La Lagune 2006 (FWHM1706)
  Classification: Third-growth (Haut-Medoc)

Having just had the 2005 La Lagune, which I think is the greatest La Lagune I have ever tasted, the 2006 certainly loses some prestige in comparison, but this is an outstanding wine and further evidence of just how strong this estate¡¦s wines have become. Sweet plum and red and black currant fruit, intermixed with notes of resiny pine forest and forest floor as well as a hint of barrique, are followed by a wine with gorgeous depth, an attractive, medium-bodied texture, a fresh, poised personality, and a moderately long finish. This is another beauty, not weighty, but pure, savory, and capable of lasting 15 or more years, although it is accessible already.

  Ch. Poujeaux 2004 (FWME0204)
  Classification: Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel (Medoc-Moulis)

A big time sleeper of the vintage as well as a fabulous value, this dark ruby/purple-colored offering hit all cylinders in 2004, a credit to proprietor Jean Thiel. Supple tannins, a big, sweet, fleshy personality, and plenty of creme de cassis, cherry, earth, and background oak are found in this full-bodied, flamboyant wine. It can be drunk now or cellared for 15 or more years. Bravo!

  Ch. Senejac 2005 (FWHM1005)
  Classification: Crus Bourgeois Superieurs (Haut-Medoc)

An attractive, reasonably priced offering, the 2005 Senejac exhibits subtle aromas of roasted herbs interwoven with scents of cedar, fruitcake, black currants, and cherries. Medium-bodied and slightly tannic, it will provide savory drinking over the next 10-12 years.

  Ch. Sociando Mallet 2005 (FWHM1605)
  Classification: None (Haut-Medoc)

Always one of the most ageworthy and backward wines of Bordeaux, Sociando Mallet could be described as the poor man¡¦s version of Latour or Montrose. Based on the still painfully young bottles of the 1975 and 1982 in my cellar, the 2005 will undoubtedly last for 30-40 years. It exhibits graphite, black currant liqueur, smoke, and toast characteristics, zesty acidity, huge tannins, and equally massive concentration and extract. From a proprietor who consistently transcends his pedigree, it is a beauty of purity and symmetry. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2040.
