  Ch. Angelus 2003 (FWEM0703)
Classification: Premiers Grand Cru Classe B

Kudos to proprietor Hubert Bouard, who has been making brilliant wines at this estate since the mid- to late-1980s. A blend of 58% Cabernet Franc and 42% Merlot, the beautiful 2003 (14% alcohol; 6,500 cases produced) is somewhat tightly knit, but it reveals a perfumed nose of rose petals, blackberries, menthol, and cedar. This broad, sweet 2003's supple attack is followed by a tannic mid-section. The wine does not appear to be as dense or structured as the 2004. Given the high percentage of Cabernet Franc, it is likely to put on considerable weight in the bottle. This beauty is slightly different not only because of the torrid vintage conditions, but also because it incorporates the highest percentage of Cabernet Franc ever utilized at Angelus. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2023.

  Classification: Grand Cru

As suggested in previous reports, Fleur-Cardinale has become a seriously run estate under the new owners, Dominique and Florence Decoster. The vineyard consists of 45 acres planted (in rich clay/limestone soils) with 70% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 15% Cabernet Franc. The winemaking team represents a partnership between Michel Rolland's top assistant, Jean-Philippe Fort, and Jean-Luc Thunevin. The 2003's deep ruby/purple color is followed by superb scents of roasted herbs, meat, black cherry jam, cassis, licorice, smoke, and a hint of truffles. This flavorful, up-front, low acid wine (4,000 cases produced) combines power and concentration with a sense of elegance and balance. Enjoy this savory, expansive, exceptionally pure 2003 over the next 10-15 years. It is unlikely to shut down.

  Classification: Grand Cru

Proprietor Dominique Decoster (of Havilland porcelain fame) has fashioned an outstanding 2004 (a 5,800-case blend of 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon).   Classification: Grand Cru Classe

This small estate owned by Chantal and Gerard Perse (9 plus acres planted with 43-year-old vines) is composed of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. In 2004, yields were a low 28-30 hectoliters per hectare, resulting in 400 cases being produced. The dense ruby/purple-colored 2004 offers smoky creme de cassis, kirsch liqueur, crushed rock, and spring flower aromas. Opulent, flamboyant, rich, dense, and lavishly endowed, it possesses enough fruit and glycerin to nearly conceal its elevated tannin. This wine should be at its finest between 2012-2025.

  Clos de L'Oratoire 2004 (FWEM1104)
  Classification: Grand Cru Classe

I tasted this wine on multiple occasions and some of the samples were more impressive than even this note suggests! Two others were somewhat monolithic, but my instincts suggest the 2004 Clos de l'Oratoire is an outstanding wine. A blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, it is extremely well-endowed for the vintage. A deep ruby/purple color is followed by aromas of espresso roast, chocolate, dried herbs, and plenty of sexy black currant and cherry fruit. Medium to full-bodied with silky tannin as well as an expressive, sensual style, it should drink beautifully for 10-12 years.

Les Jardins De Soutard 2004 (FWEM2904)
  Classification: None

In 2004, the Saint Emilion Grand Cru property of Chateau Soutard did not register its wine in time for the GC classifications (not largely surprising considering the well documented internal wranglings) and as a result did not produce either its first wine nor its usual second wine. Instead, the owner decided to produce only one new wine, Les Jardins de Soutard, and to offer it as a regular Saint Emilion. This has given us the opportunity to offer a Classified Growth quality wine at the price of a petit chateau.
