Alter Ego De Palmer 2004 (FWMA1804)
  Classification: None (Second wine)

The tasty 2004 Alter Ego may turn out to be outstanding. This brilliant effort boasts a deep ruby/purple color as well as abundant amounts of black currant, chocolate, licorice, and espresso characteristics. Lush, heady, and ripe, it will provide lovely drinking over the next decade.

  Ch. Boyd Cantenac 2003 (FWMA1303)
  Classification: Third-growth

This estate has vastly improved its wines, which remain reasonably priced, yet it is often ignored by many Bordeaux wine consumers. The tightly-knit, closed 2003 was one of the few wines of this vintage that I was only able to taste once. It is concentrated with elevated tannin, a saturated ruby/purple color, subtle smoke, flower, and black currant fruit characteristics, but a backward, broodingly closed palate. Based on this bottle, it will require 5-6 years of cellaring. It should last for 15-20 years.

  Ch. Brane Cantenac 1999 (FWMA0799)
  Classification: Second-growth

A beautifully complex perfume of fresh tobacco as well as cigar smoke, sweet licorice, and black currants is followed by an elegant, pure, harmonious Margaux. While not a big wine, it is medium-bodied, intense, and moderately structured. It should improve in the bottle, and merit an outstanding score in 2-3 years. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2016.

  Ch. Dauzac 2003 (FWMA0103)
  Classification: Fifth-growth

I had high expectations for the 2003, which has turned out to be a very good, solid wine, but not as superb as I had anticipated. A deep ruby/purple color is followed by a chunky, monolithic Margaux revealing high tannin along with plenty of damp earth characteristics interwoven with black currant and cherry fruit. Decent acidity and a borderline rustic style suggest it should be consumed between 2007-2018.

  Ch. Du Tertre 2004 (FWMA1704)
  Classification: Fifth-growth

The seductive 2004 reveals plenty of black fruits along with more structure and definition than the 2003. Its sweet perfume of flowers, licorice, smoke, and black fruits is followed by a dense, medium-bodied, beautifully pure Margaux to consume between 2008-2018.

  Ch. Du Tertre 2006 (FWMA1706)
  Classification: Fifth-growth

Herbaceous, sweet, cedary notes intermixed with black currant and barrique smells as well as some autumnal, foresty notes are followed by a medium-bodied wine that tails off in the mouth and finishes with some aggressive tannins.

  Ch. Kirwan 2004 (FWMA0204)
  Classification: Third-growth

Aromas of cedar, spice box, incense, burning embers, black currants, and new wood jump from the glass of this full-bodied, structured effort. Behaving more like a Pauillac than a Margaux, it is a long, concentrated, powerful wine meant for long aging. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2025.

  Ch. Palmer 2003 (FWMA0803)
  Classification: Second-growth

This estate¡¦s grand vin and second wine have both benefited immensely from stricter selections. The 2003 vintage¡¦s heat and drought stressed this vineyard¡¦s light soils, resulting in an atypical Palmer. The 2003 Palmer possesses a dark ruby/purple color, high, austere tannins, less flesh and mid-palate than usual, medium body, and a flowery black currant-scented bouquet. It lacks the extra dimension required aromatically, texturally, and flavor-wise to achieve their normal quality level. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2020.
