  Ch. Boyd Cantenac 2003 (FWMA1303)
  Classification: Third-growth

This estate has vastly improved its wines, which remain reasonably priced, yet it is often ignored by many Bordeaux wine consumers. The tightly-knit, closed 2003 was one of the few wines of this vintage that I was only able to taste once. It is concentrated with elevated tannin, a saturated ruby/purple color, subtle smoke, flower, and black currant fruit characteristics, but a backward, broodingly closed palate. Based on this bottle, it will require 5-6 years of cellaring. It should last for 15-20 years.

  Ch. Brane Cantenac 1999 (FWMA0799)
  Classification: Second-growth

A beautifully complex perfume of fresh tobacco as well as cigar smoke, sweet licorice, and black currants is followed by an elegant, pure, harmonious Margaux. While not a big wine, it is medium-bodied, intense, and moderately structured. It should improve in the bottle, and merit an outstanding score in 2-3 years. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2016.

  Ch. D' Issan 2004 (FWMA0304)
  Classification: Third-growth

A beautiful effort that is a model of elegance and symmetry, this 2004 d'Issan possesses a dark ruby/purple color as well as floral, raspberry, cherry, and blueberry aromas interwoven with notions of licorice and toasty oak. Beautiful ripeness, medium body, and a delicate integration of tannin and wood result in a pure Margaux that should be at its peak between 2009-2020+.

  Ch. Dauzac 2001 (FWMA0101)
  Classification: Fifth-growth

Lacking charm, this macho, muscular effort lacks charm, but is concentrated, monolithic, and dense. It should evolve into an excellent, possibly outstanding claret, but at present it is closed, tannic, and broodingly backward. Nevertheless, there is good purity as well as plenty of black fruits intermixed with earth, Provencal herbs, and melted licorice. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2016.

  Ch. Dauzac 2003 (FWMA0103)
  Classification: Fifth-growth

I had high expectations for the 2003, which has turned out to be a very good, solid wine, but not as superb as I had anticipated. A deep ruby/purple color is followed by a chunky, monolithic Margaux revealing high tannin along with plenty of damp earth characteristics interwoven with black currant and cherry fruit. Decent acidity and a borderline rustic style suggest it should be consumed between 2007-2018.

  Ch. Kirwan 2004 (FWMA0204)
  Classification: Third-growth

Aromas of cedar, spice box, incense, burning embers, black currants, and new wood jump from the glass of this full-bodied, structured effort. Behaving more like a Pauillac than a Margaux, it is a long, concentrated, powerful wine meant for long aging. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2025.

  Ch. Palmer 2003 (FWMA0803)
  Classification: Second-growth

This estateˇ¦s grand vin and second wine have both benefited immensely from stricter selections. The 2003 vintageˇ¦s heat and drought stressed this vineyardˇ¦s light soils, resulting in an atypical Palmer. The 2003 Palmer possesses a dark ruby/purple color, high, austere tannins, less flesh and mid-palate than usual, medium body, and a flowery black currant-scented bouquet. It lacks the extra dimension required aromatically, texturally, and flavor-wise to achieve their normal quality level. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2020.

  Ch. Prieure Lichine 1999 (FWMA0999)
  Classification: Fourth-growth

The 1999 Prieure-Lichine reveals notes of red currants, earth, dried herbs, and oak in a medium-bodied format. This is a light, soft, pretty but unsubstantial effort. It is best consumed over the next 7-8 years.

  Ch. Rauzan Segla 2002 (FWMA0502)
  Classification: Second-growth

53% of the crop made it into this blend of 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot, and 2% Cabernet Franc. An outstanding wine with a dark ruby/purple color and more power, richness, and concentration than its younger sibling, the 2002 reveals outstanding potential, exhibiting plenty of concentrated black currant fruit with some vanilla, herbs, and licorice. It has about the same level of tannin as the 2003, but seems to have sweeter fruit and more mid-palate and length. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2022 Readers should keep an eye out for Rauzan-Segla as they have invested heavily in a new cuverie with double triage tables installed in time for the 2004 vintage. It appears that the owners, the Chanel firm, backed up by their talented manager John Kolasa, are aspiring to even higher quality at Rauzan-Segla.
